Literature Text

"Do it again Jack, do it again!" you say, clapping and giggling. Jack smiled and winded up the little Jack in the box as it hummed familiar tune.

'All around the Mulberry bush,
the monkey chased the weasel,
the monkey thought it was all in good fun...'

Then, a small clown popped out of the box, resembling Jack.

''till POP goes the weasel!'

You smile and giggle; that was your favorite song. "Can we go on the Merry-Go-Round?"

"Of coarse, (F/N)!" Jack replied, picking you up. He carried you through the abandoned - but fully functional carnival that he made just for you. He set you down on a pink horse and the ride started spinning at a medium speed. He leans against a pole and smiles at you.

You two go the carnival every day. It only appears when he's with you, though. You tried showing your friends and your parents, but nothing was there. You tell your parents about Laughing Jack and all the fun things you do together, but your mother says it's all in your imagination. But you know that he's real, and everything he does is real.

When you get off the metal horse, Jack picks you up again and hands you some cotton candy. You then see a large red and blue bouncy house and point to it excitedly, your mouth full with sweet cotton candy. Jack nods and walks over to it, smiling.

"You know, my friend Caroline had a bouncy house like that at her birthday party last year!" you remark.

Jack stops at the mention of Caroline. You look up at him to see why. You notice that his smile immediately dropped, and the cheery blue in his irises had faded into a ghostly white. Even the carnival music stopped to a silence. You've never seen him act this way, and it's starting to scare you. Did you say something that upset him?

"...Jack?" you say, worried about your friend. The clown blinks and quickly shakes his head, his eyes going back to their normal blue as the carnival music starts back from where it left off.

"Sorry, I was just...thinking about something." he says, smiling at you. But as you make your way towards the bouncy house, despite his cheery grin, you could swear you could almost hear a low growl from his throat.

******

You and Jack are back home in your room, coloring pages from a coloring book.

"(F/C), Caroline's here!" your mom calls from downstairs. Jack freezes and looks at you.

"...What's she doing here?" he asks, saying 'she' as if the word disgusted him.

"Oh, I invited her over to play with us!" you reply. But then you frown a little bit at Jack's reaction. "I hope you don't mind."

"No, of course not. I'd be...happy...to see your friend again." he replied with a smile.

You get up and run out the door of your bedroom and down the stairs. You open the big door to see your friend at the door. You smile and hug her, and she hugs you back.

"Jack's here!" you tell her. She gasped happily.

"Yay!" she said. You two ran back up the stairs and enter your room again. You find Jack sitting on your bed, arms crossed.

"Hello again, (F/N)." he said to you. Then he turned to Caroline, glaring at her. You notice that once again, his eyes are almost pure white, and he wasn't acting anything like his normal silly, cheery self.

"Yesterday, Jack and I went to the carnival! It was so much fun! We were the only ones there, so there were no lines to the rides!" You continue to talk to Caroline. Every once in a while, she would turn to Jack and look at him, fascinated. Though you talk Jack all the time, Caroline's only seen him in person a few times before.

You learned quite a while ago that Jack can decide who does and doesn't see him, which is why your parents never see him when he's talking to you.

******

After a while, Caroline has to go back home. Once she leaves, Jack's eyes turn back to a bright blue and he seems happy again. You're not sure why he acts that way. Sure, everyone gets a bit grumpy, but Jack only seems to be like that when you mention Caroline, or when your parents are around. Despite them not being able to see him, Jack always glares at the two, with his arms crossed, but especially with your mother.

It's pretty easy to figure out why Jack dislikes your mother so much. You've tried telling your parents all about Jack and all the fun you two have together. Your dad seems fascinated and seems to really like Laughing Jack, but for your mom it's a whole other story. She used to what she called 'play along' with Laughing Jack up until you were about six. Now, whenever you even mention him, she  repeatedly tells you that he isn't real, and that you're too old for imaginary friends. But he's not imaginary. He's real, and you know that perfectly well.

******

"Why are we leaving this weekend?" you ask your parents during dinner.

"We're going to your aunt's wedding," your dad replies. "Normally, we wouldn't take you since you're a bit young, but our babysitter is out of town and it's too last-minute to call for a new one.”

“You don’t have to take me, I can stay here.” You say innocently. Your mom chuckles.

“Yes, what could go wrong with leaving and eight year old home alone for a whole day?” she said sarcastically.

“I won’t be home alone! Jack would be here. He can take care of me.”

“Sweetheart, Jack wouldn’t-“ your dad says before your mom interrupts him.

“No,  (DAD/N). We’re not doing this anymore. (F/N), how many times do I have to tell you that Jack isn’t real?” she snaps at you.

“He is too real!” you protest. “He’s here every day! Just because you can’t see him, doesn’t mean he’s not real!”

“(F/N), you’re too old for imaginary friends.  You’re almost in the 4th grade! And you know very well that that damn Laughing Jack doesn’t exist!” she says sternly, now standing up. You bite your lip, on the verge of tears. Glancing behind you, you see Jack leaning against the wall, staring daggers at your mother.

“YES HE DOES! DON’T TALK ABOUT HIM LIKE THAT! HE’S MY BEST FRIEND AND ALWAYS WILL BE!” you shout, not even caring that you were talking back to your mom. Tears now streaming down your face, you run over to Jack. He held your hand with his long fingers around yours. You take a look beind you at your mom, who sighed and rubbed her temples. You realize that since your parents can’t see Jack,  they only see you with your arm up in the middle of the air holding something that doesn’t appear to be there.

******

“(DAD/N), (F/N) is much too old for imaginary friends. She needs to start making new friends now! Real friends. It’s not healthy for her to be locked up in her room all day, practically talking to herself!” you hear your mom yell at your dad, as you cling tighter to Jack, who is sitting on your bed, embracing you.

“(MOM/N), she’ll grow out of it eventually! What, do you think she’s going to be in high school still talking to Jack? She’s just a child, (MOM/N), why can’t you let her just believe that he’s real, and when she realizes it’s all in her head, she’ll make some other friends!” your dad says back.

You burry your face into Jack’s soft white and blue feathers on his shoulders. You feel him cling to you, gently scooting you away from the closed door of your room, almost in a protective manor. You could hear them fighting for what seemed like years. Because of your excessive crying, you eventually fell asleep in Jack’s arms. Once he realized this, he got up and put you on your bed, careful not to wake up. Like every night, he left, disappearing into thin air. You never knew where he went, and you never really thought to ask. You shifted in your sleep, clinging to the pillow. No matter what your parents said, no matter what they thought, you knew Jack was real. He wasn’t imaginary. And that was a fact.
********

I am a total Laughing Jack fan.

I couldn't stop reading Jack x Reader stories.

So I made my own. The beginning is slow, but around chapter 3 it gets a bit more exciting.

You also have a friend named Caroline. Deal with it. :icondealwithitplz:
